December 20, 2016 Update
All Fall 2016 courses successfully completed in Canvas -- the full transition to Instructure's learning management system is complete! Moving forward Information Technology will collaborate with Elmira College faculty to assist in refining and enhancing their Canvas courses using resources such as audio recordings, video lectures, online discussions, student-faculty journals, course pages, interactive quizzes, Twitter, and links. For assessment Canvas provides tools quizzes, surveys, Speedgrader commenting and annotation, gradable assignment rubrics, course and program outcomes aligned to rubrics, and the learning mastery gradebook.
Information Technology will archive ANGEL course exports (Fall 2013 through Spring 2016) for faculty through June 30, 2017. Please note that these exports only include instructor files that were uploaded to these courses.
June 7, 2016 Update
Fall 2016 - All Canvas courses will be available to faculty on June 20. Students will have access to these courses after August 28 AND when their instructors publish them.
Summer 2016 - All faculty teaching during this term are using Canvas. ANGEL is no longer available - permanently retired. Canvas training sessions will be offered to all faculty during June, July, and August.
The Canvas Help site: Canvas at Elmira College will be expanded to provide a central resource for training, instructional resources and help.
Spring 2016 - Canvas license full expanded to cover all students and faculty. All faculty have the option to use Canvas if they choose. However, ANGEL will still be available.
Winter 2016 - Faculty who used Canvas for their Fall 2015 courses will continue to use Canvas this term. Remaining faculty will use ANGEL. Students will be informed by their instructors whether they will be using ANGEL or Canvas.
Fall 2015 - Completed! Students and faculty using Canvas completed surveys in early December. Results will be shared with the College Community.

WHY CANVAS (POSTED IN FALL 2015)
Exciting change in academic technology at Elmira College! A committee of faculty and administrators has unanimously chosen Canvas by Instructure as Elmira College's new learning management system (LMS) to replace ANGEL. During the Spring 2015 Term 14 faculty and 280 students participated in their courses to test, evaluate, and compare two LMS finalists, including Canvas. Their survey results and comments provided important feedback to the LMS Committee as part of the selection process.
Canvas was chosen because it is a modern, easy-to-use, efficient, and communication focused system that will serve as Elmira College’s primary academic technology resource. In addition to an enhanced student and faculty user experience Canvas provides new tools such as integrated web/video conferencing, a built-in ePortfolio system, mobile apps to quickly and easily access courses, and the ability for faculty to plug in learning modules. Canvas is a cloud-based service like Google Apps that continuously delivers new enhancements and guarantees a near 100% uptime essential for anytime, everyday student and faculty coursework.
There are many benefits to adopting Canvas. Notably our new LMS becomes a major development resource for our faculty and students that enables them to significantly enhance their teaching and learning with technology skills.
ANGEL will continue to be supported by Blackboard through the Spring of 2016 to facilitate Elmira College's transition to Canvas.
